DRAIN CLEANING SERVICES BY PROFESSIONAL PLUMBERS
Drain cleaning helps protect your most valuable asset: your home or business.
Slow, smelly, or gurgling drains can be a sign of serious, costly damage on the horizon.
Our Tampa team finds the cause fast, clears it the right way, and helps keep it from coming back with camera inspections, cabling, and hydro jetting.
WHY IS ROUTINE DRAIN CLEANING IMPORTANT?
Tampa Bay presents a unique set of drain and sewer challenges including:
- Sandy soil that tends to shift after heavy storms. This can crack or collapse your drain line.
- Root intrusions that crack and clog drain pipes. This is especially common for Tampa Bay given Florida’s lush environment and fast-growing vegetation.
- Hard water scale that builds up on the pipe walls. The greater Tampa Bay area, including St. Petersburg, is notorious for high-mineral water.
- Grease and soap scum that block drain flow after years of daily use.
Causes for drain and sewer problems aren’t always obvious
A trained plumber uses a drain inspection camera, which allows them to see the problem at its source.
Unfortunately, we have seen many failed attempts by local residents who thought they could solve the issue themselves:
- Harsh chemicals can corrode certain kinds of pipes and are dangerous for humans, pets, and wildlife.
- DIY drain snaking can crack and damage pipe walls leading to much more costly repairs.
- Additionally, while it is possible to restore flow by DIY methods, they often miss the underlying cause, allowing the problem to recur.
Skip the guesswork and save time. Book with a professional who is armed with the tools and knowledge to complete the job correctly the first time.
DRAIN CLEANING METHODS
DRAIN CABLING & SNAKING
Typically, a plumber will cable or “snake” a drain first to break up or loosen the blockage.
- Handheld augers are used for sink, tub, and shower drains.
- Large, motorized cables are used for main sewer lines.
While this method likely provides relief, it does not restore the drain to its maximum flow potential. Residue left on the walls of the pipe can allow drain blockage to reform quickly. If clogs repeat, we follow with hydro jetting to restore full pipe diameter.
HYDRO JETTING DRAINS & SCOURING SEWERS
The prescription for repeat clogs in a drain is hydro jetting. This process uses a highly pressurized water jet up to 4,000 PSI at 4–8 GPM with rotating nozzles to scour the interior sewer wall. Even for older cast-iron lines, our Tampa Bay hydro jetting teams remove scale and roots to restore full flow. Hydro jetting results in the following:
- Restores full flow in your drain system.
- Removes roots, soap scum, grease, scale, and any other residue that may remain inside the pipe after initial cabling.
- Reduces future clogs by not leaving residue for new debris to stack on.
This method can be used if the drain or sewer is in relatively good condition and made of a sturdy material. How do we determine the condition of your drain and which methods to employ?
DRAIN CAMERA INSPECTIONS & ACCURATE DIAGNOSTICS
How does a plumber know what is going on several feet down the drain? We use special cameras which can be inserted into a drain system. This allows our technicians to:
- Know where the blockage is occurring.
- Determine how severe the clog is and its composition.
- See whether there is any damage to the drain or sewer itself.
- We show you the drain camera video on-site and price options before we start. We can email you a clip of the footage upon request.
Bellies, cracks, collapses, and rot cannot be solved by cabling or hydro jetting. Instead, a spot repair or a full drain line replacement may be required. We offer upfront menu pricing after the camera inspection; no surprise add-ons.

WHEN IS A SEWER REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT NECESSARY?
Sometimes a clog is cleared and it doesn’t happen again for a long time. However, they can repeat over and over. That, along with the following are reasons we would suggest a drain replacement:
- 2 or more backups within 90 days of drain cleaning on the same line.
- A pipe belly deeper than one pipe diameter or multiple cracks revealed by the drain camera.
- Repeated root intrusion every 6–12 months.
- Orangeburg pipe or fractured clay segments.
- Multiple spot repairs on the same line in succession.
A sewer can be in relatively good shape except for a particular spot. In that case, we recommend a spot repair.
Schedule-40 PVC
If your sewer is made of Schedule-40 PVC, a proper drain cleaning may be all that is required. If it was incorrectly installed or the soil shifted, then a spot repair or full replacement may be necessary. Schedule-40 PVC is the modern standard for drain installations and is usually the best choice for your home or business’s sewer system.
Thin-wall PVC
Drains made of Thin-wall PVC piping may crack, bend, belly, or even shatter after stress or improper installation. In such a case, we recommend a full drain replacement if the damage is severe. While Thin-wall PVC can be cheaper, over time it does not hold up as well as thick and robust Schedule-40 PVC.
Cast Iron
Cast iron piping corrodes over time causing a narrowing channel in the bottom of the pipe, making it more difficult for solids to exit to the city tie-in. Additionally, cast iron can shatter or break from root intrusions and aging. If your home predates the 1980s, there is a chance that your sewer was constructed with cast iron. Drain cleaning alone is not likely to work as a long-term solution. We strongly suggest repair or full replacement of this material with the modern standard.
Vitrified Clay (Terra Cotta)
We tend to find this material used in properties built prior to the 1970s. These drains often shatter at connections, letting roots in. Gentle jetting can be done with the correct nozzle and pressure, but heavy scouring risks damage at joints. Recurring roots are common; replacement is usually the durable fix.
Orangeburg
This pipe is made of compressed wood pulp and coal tar pitch. This material was frequently used for sewer installations from the 1940s to the 1970s. Not only is it decades old, but also the material is easily crushed by shifting soil after Florida storms and easily infiltrated by fast-growing tree roots. Cleaning Orangeburg is temporary at best; immediate replacement is recommended.

FAQS ABOUT DRAIN CLEANING IN TAMPA BAY
Q: What’s the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
Snaking (or cabling) breaks through clogs using a rotating cable, restoring flow, but often leaves residue on pipe walls. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to completely clean the inside of your pipes — removing grease, scale, and buildup for a longer-lasting solution.
Q: How do I know if tree roots are causing my drain problems?
If you have frequent clogs, slow drains in multiple areas, or gurgling noises from your pipes, it could mean tree roots have infiltrated your sewer line. A sewer camera inspection can quickly confirm root intrusion so we can recommend the best fix.
Q: Will hydro jetting damage my pipes?
Not when it’s done correctly. We inspect the line with a camera first, then match nozzle, pressure, and flow to your pipe material and condition. Used properly, jetting is safe for cast iron, clay, and PVC, and it restores full diameter by removing grease, scale, and roots. Unforeseen issues – such as a hairline crack in the pipe wall – may result in additional damage after jetting.
Q: How often should I schedule drain or sewer cleaning?
For typical homes, every 2–4 years is fine. Older homes with cast-iron lines or properties with large trees may benefit from annual camera checks and jetting every 1–2 years.
Q: Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use first?
Not recommended. They can damage certain pipes, void warranties, and create safety hazards for anyone who works on the line afterward. Mechanical clearing and jetting are safer and more effective.
Q: When do I need to replace a sewer instead of cleaning it?
If the camera shows collapsed sections, severe corrosion, repeated root intrusions, or multiple prior spot repairs on the same run, replacement with Schedule-40 PVC is the durable fix.
